I do not know where people get the idea that Affirmative Action means incompetent or dumb. That is so far from the truth and is a misguided notion and myth that those who want to end it came up with as an obstruction block to prevent the advancement of minorities.
Affirmative Action implemented to open doors shut to minorities in the past. It did not give anyone who was not qualified entrance into Colleges or Universities or enable anyone without qualifications for a particular job. The applicant was still required to have a certain GPA for admittance or qualifications for a particular job.
There were no automatic good grades issued because of minority status. Once in the door, black students had to earn their grades the same way any white student did by studying and doing the work. More was required of minorities than was of white students in order to receive decent grade in classes. Therefore, minorities had to work harder while going an extra mile to achieve a grade above a "C". Unfortunately, white teachers did not exactly roll out the red carpet and say, “You’re black, so you get an “A” or “B” or pass or graduate. It did not work that way.
For some reason, the Republicans just don't get it, but then again, they've always been against anything that they felt would help black people or people different from them. So true to their discriminatory nature, some Republican students at California University of Berkeley have decided to have a racist cupcake sale. No, I am not kidding. They've put an anouncement on facebook and sent out flyers to announce that it will be held on September 27, 2011.
They plan to sale cupcakes at what they consider discrimination prices by race. Of course, whites will have to pay more and Blacks and Natives Americans will have to pay less to buy one of their cupcakes. If you do not come out and buy one of their cupcakes you will be considered racist. They seem to think that whites are the most deprived, underprivileged, and discriminated race in America and the cupcakes are their way of demonstrating this. According, to their announcement this cupcake sale is to promote diversity. However, the cupcake sale main purpose is to protest Affirmative Action.

Granny, "...More was required of minorities than was of white students in order to receive decent grade in classes. Therefore, minorities had to work harder while going an extra mile to achieve a grade above a "C"..."
No, Granny, 'more' was not required than White students. That is totally untrue.
I felt an earthquake earlier. It shook me up.
Teachers hold lower expectations for blacks and are less encouraging to those students.

I've been feeling like we are due an earthquake soon for some reason. It's like a darkness has come over the USA.
"I've been feeling like we are due an earthquake soon for some reason. It's like a darkness has come over the USA."
Yes, I feel the same.
"I do not know where people get the idea that Affirmative Action means incompetent or dumb."
Part of the reason, I believe: Affirmative Action is wrongly associated with blacks only. White women, Asians, American Indians, as well as those of Mexican descent, benefited from the program, as well.
Yet, this aspect of Affirmative Action gets very little attention, even from those non-blacks that used its provisions to remove obstacles to their on-the-job success.
And how did mainstream bigots want to portray those blacks who excelled under Affirmative Action (especially since certain whites believed that it hurt their chances to be hired, and advanced)?
They wanted to characterize them as inferior to other workers. What else could explain their general inability to get hired, and promoted?
It certainly wasn't racism, or sexism in the work place!
Balderdash!
Let me see if I have this right: Women buyers get $0.25 off of each purchase, making the effective price for white women a buck 75, and for black women 50 cent.
Not only is the Bake Sale misogynistic, and racist, the group want to use the sale as way to attack "diversity" under the guise of promoting it; attack racism, while at the same time spreading it, and strengthening its hand.
Why am I not surprised that it's Berkeley College Republicans behind this?
What's sadder: Some blacks, calling themselves conservatives and libertarians, will plop down their 75 cents, or show in other ways their support for what these college students are doing.
Ideological predisposition should never replace commonsense, or common decency, or contribute to a sanctioning of racist attacks against one's own race.
It's stupid and unnatural!
Granny, I said the following upthread:
"Some blacks, calling themselves conservatives and libertarians, will plop down their 75 cents, or show in other ways their support for what these college students are doing."
Little did I know (but I'm not shocked) that a black person (He looks black to me.) would be at the Bake Sale selling these offensive treats.
And sitting at the table with him, a white woman. With the misogyny and racism so prominently on display, you'd think they would know better.
Sometime I feel I'm living in bizarro land, where up is down, and down is up.
Diapora, don't feel like the lone ranger and I'm not surprised, myself. The sad part is that they are all being played like a piano, unless they are rich. What people do not know and understand is that how students are chosen to be accepted in Universities is complicated and more than just GPA is figured into the evalution methods used in accepting students.
First, regardless, if a person is an "A" student or not does not mean that they will be accepted because all schools only have so many slots for those students. In other words, if they only have 3,000 slots open and available for students with straight "A", but 5,000 students with straight "A"s apply, 2,000 of them are not going to be accepted. That was even before Affirmative Action came into existence and is still applies to this day.
Second, it also depends on the major they are applying for too and how many slots they have and the gpa standard for it. A student could have straight "A"s, but it could be defined as a low in certain majors depending on the prior school districts grading system.
Third, the grading system of the prior school has a lot to do with it too. Just because you were an "A" student there does not mean that it is the same "A". In other words, the schools grading system may be lower.
Fourth, any student applying has to meet the gpa standard and all requirements, regardless, if they are Affirmative Action or not.
And it is way more than that determined in accepting students into colleges, but the school won't tell people that because some in administratators cater to the rich and do not want their schools desegregated, so they let them blame Affirmative Action, but in reality they don't want any blacks, women, or middleclass/poor whites in their schools either. They want colleges to go back to for the white rich folks only.
Although, they signed an Affirmative Action bill into congress it did not make it as easy as folks put on for blacks to be accepted in colleges. There was a catch 22 attached to it as with everything else that is supposed to help black folks.
If people would only stop and think about why are corporations popping up all over campuses and the Republicans fighting so hard to end funding for schools, they would recognized that they are being played and Affirmative Actions is just one of their scapegoats to get a foothold in with.
All great points, Granny.
Without something to even the playing field, to broaden opportunities, blacks and other minorities will fall farther back in their quest for a quality education at our country's most prestigious colleges and universities.
Were we all the same, and treated all the same, this wouldn't be an issue: But we both know that color, and ethnicity, money, or the lack of it, and a student's social strata, constitute a major reason why one student is accepted and another isn't.
Need I tell you that Ward Connerly was also in attendance at the Infamous Bake Sale of misogyny and racism?
"Some blacks, calling themselves conservatives and libertarians, will plop down their 75 cents, or show in other ways their support for what these college students are doing."
can somebody please clarify what a libertarian is compared to a liberal or conservative?

Libetarian = One who advocates minimizing the role of government.

Libertarians want to cut social security and repeal the green energy act. They believe in charter schools where parents are allocated to a certain amount of money that they could direct toward a school of their choice. In addition, they favor raising the retirement age.
Granny, how are Libertarians any different from the GOP?
